A 79-year-old man caused a fatal California accident when he managed to maneuver his Buick under rail crossing barriers. NBC Los Angeles notes that the MetroLink train was unable to stop, going on to say that:
A man in his 70s was killed today when a Metrolink train struck his vehicle in Baldwin Park.
Train number 304 was heading from Union Station in downtown Los Angeles to San Bernardino when the crash occurred about 9:35 a.m. at Francisquito Avenue, said Sherita Coffelt of Metrolink.
Authorities withheld the man’s name, pending notification of his relatives. Two passengers on the train were hospitalized, Coffelt said.
The train was halted, and Metrolink used buses to transport passengers around the area. The train was released for service after about two hours, Coffelt said.
The Pasadena Star noted that 125 passengers were on the train, and the two passengers’ injury status was unknown following their hospitalization.
