Could a Deadly E. Coli Outbreak Occur in the United States?

According to an article on NPR, the type of deadly e. coli outbreak seen in Germany and France, while not expected, could certainly happen in the United States. Dr. Christopher Braden, an official at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, expressed concern that “something similar…could happen in the United States.” The article reports that e. coli infections cause hundreds of thousands of illnesses and almost 100 deaths annually in the United States.
