The row of eucalyptus trees on Irvine Avenue has been removed. Officials called it a “heartbreaking decision” but made it after consulting experts on the stability of the row of trees after one fell last week onto a car and killed the driver, Haeyoon Miller.
Four arborists determined that the “hedgerow” of trees along an Irvine Avenue median near 17thStreet in Costa Mesa could have been compromised, Kiff said, and that the city should act before another tree fell. The canopy and roots support each other and losing even one could jeopardize the others. “It’s like a fence that’s all linked together,” he said. LA Times, 22 Sep 2011.
